A woman named Ann Baker created Ragdolls in the early 1960’s in Riverside, California. She was known to some as an "eccentric cat lady". The cats she used to create Ragdolls, were a long haired, white female, named "Josephine", and two mixed breed male cats, named "Blackie" and "Beauty". A pointed male "Daddy Warbucks" and a female named "Buckwheat" were born from Josephine and with a careful breeding program she created the Ragdolls we know and love today. She believed "the money" was in the traditional pointed varieties and promoted them, but also kept the Solid and Mink varieties. Most breeders only work with the traditional lines, but there are more breeders opening their catteries and their hearts to the Solid and Minks. Ann Baker gave this wonderful breed the Ragdoll name due to the fact, that when you hold them, they tend to relax so completely in your arms, it's like holding a child's rag doll. These cats make wonderful family pets. Ragdolls are not aloof cats; they will crave your attention! They have the most amazing coats. They range from medium to long in length and it's best described as being bunny rabbit soft. Ragdolls are not hypoallergenic. They do shed, but not as much as other long hair breeds. They enjoy a gentle weekly brushing, and will not mat up even if you skip a few weeks.
